How To Back Up Your Computer's Data

First Up Export and Then Specify Software

Before you do anything, get organized, If you aren't doing a full system backup, you'll need to decide which files you want to back up. Figure out what you can't replace easily, and move it into files that are easily found and identified. For Windows XP users, if your documents, music, photos and other important data are organized in the My Documents folder, it will make your job easier. Also consider backing up any e-mail stored on your computer, your address book (usually In folders under My Computer / Local Disk / Documents and Settings) and your browser favorites and cookies (for Internet Explorer, click on File and Export and then specify the backup file to export them to).

Hardware

Generally, there are three ways to back up your photos, music, documents and other data. The least expensive but most time-consuming is transferring that data to CDs or DVDs, which require a CD or DVD burner. If you have a lot of data, using CDs could mean burning a lot of discs. Most DVDs, on the other hand, can hold up to 4.7 gigabytes of data. The easiest solution, but probably the most expensive, uses an external hard drive to mirror that important information. Finally, online sites like Xdrive offer online backup.

Most free and commercial backup software allows you to click and highlight the files and folders you want backed up. They also let you schedule when each day or week you'd like the action performed. A few, like the $80 Acronis True Image 9.1 Workstation, back up files continuously, even those open flies you're working on.

Just do it

Slip in a disc and fire up your burner. Or plug the flash drive into a USB port or the external hard drive into a USB or Firewire port. Launch the software, sit back and breathe a little easier.
