What is Acronis OS Selector 8.0?

Acronis OS Selector 8.0 is a boot and partition manager. As a boot manager it allows you to multiboot between several operating systems installed on your computer. I wanted to resize a FAT partition, but when I select the "Resize" item from the menu, "File system: incorrect file size" error message appears and resize is not possible. What should I do?

Acronis OS Selector 8.0 Disk Administrator allows operations with a partition's file system only if there are no errors in it. You should first use CHKDSK or SCANDISK program from some operating system to fix all errors on the partition and only then should you start Disk Administrator to resize the partition

I have a hard disk with Windows 2000, which consists of one NTFS partition, so that there is no place where other partitions can be created.I have purchased a new hard disk, have plugged in it as Slave and tried to install Windows 98 on it, but could not do that. Then I set booting from disk D: in the BIOS Setup, and Windows 98 installed without any problems. Now I always have to change the boot order in BIOS Setup when I want to boot another operating system, and it is very inconvenient. Can Acronis OS Selector 8.0 help me in this case?

Yes, it can. Choose the boot order in BIOS Setup when Windows NT hard disk is the first. Then install Acronis OS Selector 8.0. It will detect Windows 98 on the second hard disk and will be able to boot it from there. If you have primary FAT partitions on the first hard disk, Acronis OS Selector 8.0 will be unable to automatically detect Windows 98. In this case you should use the OS Detection Wizard to hide those partitions and add Windows 98 manually.

A new boot manager included in Acronis Disk Director® Suite 10.0 allows you to set a boot sequence required for booting an operating system without changing BIOS settings. Using this feature you can first set your second hard drive to boot and then install Windows 98 without any problems. You can upgrade Acronis OS Selector 8.0 to Acronis Disk Director® Suite 10.0 with a 40% discount at Acronis online store.

The Guide says that few operating systems update MBR during installation, but any Windows 95 / 98 completely removes the old MBR and replaces it with its own one. Does it happen only to me, or is it common of any computer where Windows is being installed?

Having Acronis OS Selector 8.0, you will not have to pay attention to it, since it adds a call to a special REINSTAL.COM program to AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and it restores the MBR contents if it is overwritten (however, this feature doesn't work in Windows ME, where AUTOEXEC.BAT files are not processed). You won't need to worry about restoring MBR if you use the Windows Installation Wizard that is built into Acronis OS Selector 8.0 to install Windows 95 / 98 / ME.

Are there any ways to change Acronis OS Selector 8.0 configuration from DOS or Windows?

No, there aren't. The reasons are as follows:
Acronis OS Selector 8.0 may be installed on a separate partition that is not available to other operating systems, besides, Setup uses special Acronis OS Selector 8.0 Loader features that are unavailable in any operating system. The way hard disks appear from an operating system may differ drastically from the way BIOS sees them.

Note that the boot manager of the new Acronis Disk Director® Suite 10.0 can be started in Windows. You can change configuration settings, edit OS settings, etc. Acronis OS Selector 8.0 can be upgraded to Acronis Disk Director® Suite 10.0 with a 40% discount at Acronis online store.

I have a Windows 98 operating system installed on a FAT32 partition of my computer, and I also want to install Windows 2000, so that it uses a NTFS file system. Can Acronis OS Selector 8.0 help me?

Yes, it can. You should install Acronis OS Selector 8.0 and run Disk Administrator from its Boot menu. Then select a FAT32 partition, decrease its size, and create an NTFS partition in the resulting free space. Now you can install Windows 2000 by selecting the new partition in its Setup program.

Several people use my computer. Can I somehow limit their access to software?

Yes, a quite flexible password system is built into Acronis OS Selector 8.0. You can set separate passwords to the Boot Menu (this password is required every time the computer is booted) to each boot configuration. You can also set a special administration password (this one is required to start Setup or Disk Administrator).
Of course, this protection is not absolute, and it is better to use it along with other protection means that are built into operating systems.

I deleted the BOOTWIZ folder, and now every time I boot my computer, I get an error message, and then Windows is booted. How can I get rid of this error message?

Of course, you should not have deleted Acronis OS Selector 8.0 this way, since you could have lost all your operating systems. You can get rid of the error message by executing "FDISK /MBR" from any Windows 95 / 98 / ME or MS-DOS, or by re-writing the MBR code some other way.

I already have Acronis OS Selector 8.0, and I would like to install Linux on my computer. Where should I install the Linux loader: to MBR or to the boot sector of the partition? Maybe I do not have to install it at all?

Acronis OS Selector 8.0 does not substitute the Linux loader, so it is better to install the Linux loader (usually GRUB or Lilo) to the boot sector of the partition to which you plan to install Linux proper.

Is it possible to use the Acronis OS Selector 8.0 Boot Menu to boot not only from floppy disks, but also from CD-ROMs, or ZIP diskettes?

You can boot both from floppy disks and ZIP diskettes from the Boot Menu. Booting from a CD-ROM is not supported in Acronis OS Selector 8.0.

Note that booting from CD disks is now supported in a new boot manager of Acronis Disk Director® Suite 10.0. You can upgrade Acronis OS Selector 8.0 to Acronis Disk Director® Suite 10.0 with a 40% discount at Acronis online store.

I have installed Linux on my computer, and now I am unable to get into the Acronis OS Selector 8.0 Boot Menu (after reboot I get directly into Linux). How can this problem be solved?

Obviously, you have installed the Linux loader (GRUB or Lilo) into MBR, so the Acronis OS Selector 8.0 MBR was erased. You must boot from the Acronis OS Selector 8.0 bootable media and select the "Activate" option.

I have Windows 95/98/ME installed. But when I booted another OS from another partition or floppy drive, I found that my Windows and Program Files folders are empty. What happened?

The contents of your system folders has been moved to the hidden BOOTWIZ folder on the same drive. This feature was designed to allow you to boot several Windows operating systems from the same partition.
To turn this feature off, you should do the following:

  1. Reboot your computer and wait for Acronis OS Selector 8.0 boot menu to appear.
  2. Enter the Setup (by choosing Setup from the Tools pull-down menu or by pressing Ctrl-S).
  3. In Setup switch to operating systems view (by pressing F5).
  4. Select the operating system, for which you want to disable system folders saving. Be sure to select operating system, not configuration. Open operating system properties (by pressing Enter).
  5. In operating system properties choose Folders tab, and specify what folders are saved (moved to BOOTWIZ folder) for this operating system.

A large hard disk is plugged in my computer, so I have to use the Maxtor MaxBlast utility to access more than 8 gigabytes. This program is installed in MBR. Will it work with Acronis Acronis OS Selector 8.0?

Acronis OS Selector 8.0 is fully compatible with drive overlay programs such as MaxBlast, DM6 DDO, or EZ-Drive. Of course, Acronis OS Selector 8.0 should be installed on a hard disk after such program is installed and loaded into memory.

I use Roxio GoBack and have problems with Acronis OS Selector 8.0.

The problem is that Roxio GoBack is installed into MBR, where boot managers usually reside. GoBack also changes existing partitions type (FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, etc.) into its own format, making them incompatible with existing partitioning software while GoBack is active. In order to avoid conflicts with Roxio GoBack, you should install Acronis OS Selector 8.0 only from Windows.

I have installed Linux, but it does not appear in Acronis OS Selector 8.0 boot menu. What's wrong?

Acronis OS Selector 8.0 could detect Linux only if its loader had been installed in Master Boot Record (MBR), or in the boot sector of a primary partition. You should boot your Linux from a bootable diskette or CD-ROM, and install Linux loader into MBR, or the boot sector of a primary partition. To do this, see your system manual, or contact a support team of your system's vendor.
