As Acronis continually develops and improves its products, it is a good practice to regularly install the latest updates. Updates provide recent enhancements and minor fixes to Acronis products (i.e. moving from 8.0 build 3518 to 8.0 build 3519). Updates are free of charge.

If you have an older version of the product, but want to upgrade to a new version of an Acronis product (i.e. moving from version 8.0 to version 9.0), then you need to purchase an upgrade.
