Acronis MigrateEasy for Hard Disk Drive vendors

Acronis MigrateEasy for Hard Disk Drive vendors
Product tour. Manual mode

Below you can see screenshots of Acronis MigrateEasy working under manual mode.

Manual transfer mode

Manual transfer mode
Select "manual mode" on the "Select transfer mode" page. In this mode you get control over all new disk installation features and you are able to configure the old disk upon data transfer.

The purpose of the new disk

The purpose of the new disk
In the automatic mode the new disk is configured just as the old disk was configured. In the manual mode you can choose between configuring the new disk as a boot disk or as an additional data storage device.

Source hard disk

See larger picture

Source hard disk
Select the disk from which data is to be transferred from the list of disks installed on your computer. Aside from the list of disks, this page also shows the partition structure of the selected disk and the parameters of each partitions (size, type, file system).

Destination disk

See larger picture

Destination disk
From the list of disks installed on your computer select the disk to which data is to be transferred (new hard disk).

Partitions on new disk

Partitions on new disk
If the destination disk is not empty (partitioned or possibly with data exist on it) the program reminds you of that and prompts you to explicitly confirm that these partitions may be deleted.

Erasing data from the old disk

Erasing data from the old disk
In the manual transfer mode you can decide yourself what to do with the old hard disk. Acronis Migrate Easy allows you to:

  • create new partitions on the old disk;
  • keep data on the old disk intact;
  • selectively erase data from the old disk.

Erasing data from the old disk

Erasing data from the old disk
If you want to completely erase all data from the old disk, switch the "How to use the old disk" switch to the corresponding position. Next you are prompted to choose how the data should be erased. The two proposed ways differ by speed and security: the higher the speed, the higher the probability that some bytes of trace data may remain intact.

Creating partitions on the old disk

Creating partitions on the old disk
To create partitions on the old disk switch the radio button on the "How to use the old disk" page to the "Create new partitions on the old disk" position (by default the program offers you to keep data unchanged.)

Partition transfer mode

See larger picture

Partition transfer mode
On the "Partition transfer mode" page you can choose how data is to be transferred to the new disk. By default the program offers to transfer partitions "proportionally", i.e. sizes of partitions are increased proportionally to the ratio of the new and old hard disk capacities. However, you can also choose to transfer partitions manually.

Partition structure before and after data transfer

Partition structure before and after data transfer
Acronis Migrate Easy shows the partition structure of the old disk (before partition transfer) and the envisioned structure of partitions on the new disk (after transfer). To resize transferred partitions check the Resize partitions checkbox.

Select partition for resizing

Select partition for resizing
You can select a partition on the destination disk (the new disk) to be resized. (On this screenshot there is only one partition, but there can be any number of partitions and all will be shown in this list.)

Resizing partitions

See larger picture

Resizing partitions
On this screenshot a partition that occupied entire disk (1628 MB) is reduced to 1000 MB. The unallocated or available free hard disk space can be used to create another partition. Here is shown how easy a partition can be resized with the mouse, simply by moving the right side of the rectangle symbolizing the partition.

Moving partitions
The screenshot shows how simply dragging the rectangle, symbolizing it, with the mouse, can move a partition.

Creating partitions on the old disk

Creating partitions on the old disk
Check the "Create new partition" checkbox on the "New partition" page - this creates partitions on the old hard disk. (Source disk space is shown as completely empty.)

Selecting file system type

Selecting file system type
Select one of file systems supported by Acronis Migrate Easy to be used on the new partition on the "File system type" page. Acronis Migrate Easy supports both Windows-specific and Linux-specific file systems.

Partition type

Partition type
Acronis Migrate Easy allows the creation of both primary partitions and logical disks. Primary partitions are usually created when the hard disk is supposed to be bootable.

Setting partition number

See larger picture

Setting partition number
The screenshot shows that a partition is being created on the source disk. A new partition can be created in the remaining free (unallocated) space. It is shown how to resize a partition with the mouse by dragging the right side of the rectangle that symbolizes the partition. (Partitions can also be resized or moved with key-strokes.)

Partition label

See larger picture

Partition label
Acronis Migrate Easy also allows assigning non-mandatory labels to partitions.

Partition created on the disk

Partition created on the disk
A partition that has been created on the old disk is immediately shown in the disk partition structure. Since unallocated space is still available on the disk, the "Create new partition" checkbox is available and checked by default.

Scenario page

Scenario page
Manual transfer of data from the old disk to the new hard disk may require many more operations than are available under automatic mode. Manual mode allows all unique properties to be parsed between the old and new disks. All disk operations are pending — pressing the "Proceed" button begins the implementation of the scenario. You can refuse implementing the scenario by pressing the "Next" or "Cancel" buttons.

So, unlike the "automatic" data transfer mode, the "manual" mode allows you to:

  • have full control over the sizes and positions of partitions that are transferred to the new disk(s);
  • create partitions on the old hard disk and choose file systems along with the data transfer.

You can make the new disk a boot disk, an additional data storage device and/or create both primary partitions and logical disks.
