How to move applications

Have you ever wondered why you can't simply move an application from, say, one disk drive to another? The answer is simple; Because moving applications is risky and it doesn't always work.

Acronis recommends using the Windows Move command only to move data associated with applications (documents, spreadsheets, images, etc.) If you create a new partition on your disk or install an additional drive, Acronis recommends reinstalling the applications in the new partitions and uninstalling them from the old partitions.

While data can be moved from one partition to another quite easily, moving an application is another matter entirely. Moving an application can do anything from knocking out network access to the program to corrupting the program itself or to causing other applications to fail.

The problem with moving applications is that Windows applications depend on Registry entries and often files that could be scattered in unpredictable locations. Although the Windows Move command tries to keep everything straight, information doesn't always get updated when an application is moved. To further complicate matters, some programs share pieces, such as Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs), with other applications. When those DLLs are moved, the other programs that use them may not be able to find them.

There isn't an absolute prohibition on moving applications. You can successfully move applications in Windows. Sometimes you can move them with third-party application utilities. But sometimes you can't move them at all.

There are programs that will move applications to new partitions, but they are limited and somewhat chancy. The maker of one of the more popular such programs specifically recommends against trying to move large, complex applications like Microsoft Office because of the number of dependencies. And moving the operating system from one partition to another flat does not work.

What does work is to reinstall the programs in the new partition. This is usually simple and fairly fast. The installer takes care of setting everything up properly so you avoid the problems of moving programs.

Just make sure you have the program's serial numbers available before you start moving and reinstalling applications.
