Q: Where are the error messages logged?

Most of the key error messages are logged to the MT-PHPLog.log file in the MTWeb Webroot folder.

Additional error messages are logged to the webserver's default error log. For IIS, the default is folder is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles.
