Cloud backup and cloud storage: what is the difference?

Cloud backup vs Cloud storage

The cloud hype has blurred the lines between cloud storage and cloud backup. Many providers like it that way because it gives them a broader appeal in capturing potential customers. But clouding up cloud definitions confuses the market.

In reality they are very different solutions for different business challenges.

Acronis Announces Partnership with Microsoft AzureIn the latest move to continually increase choice and flexibility to its customers and service partners, this week Acronis announced a new strategic partnership with Microsoft for deeper integration of Acronis’ data protection products with Microsoft’s Azure cloud services. The partnership will provide expanded access to the public cloud platform, giving customers another option for their backup storage and disaster recovery.

As a result of the partnership, customers and service providers will be able to store their data or clients’ data in the Azure cloud more easily. That’s because Azure will be available as a possible storage destination in future versions of Acronis products, appearing alongside our own secure Acronis Cloud and other public cloud vendors.

The partnership expands the capabilities Acronis already delivers to those who rely on Azure.

We’ve all heard the phrase “time is money.” If you’ve ever questioned the truth of that statement, consider this: 98 percent of organizations surveyed by the Rand Group reported that a single hour of downtime costs over $100,000. Advancements in technology make that number both astounding and understandable ... every minute counts.

That’s why Update 2 for Acronis Backup, the recently launched set of enhancements, focused on addressing user-benefits that would deliver savings that went beyond “just” data.

The arrival of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is imminent: the official cutover date is 25 May 2018. In previous blog posts, we’ve explained the majority of its new obligations and roles, but one question requires special attention: the so-called “right to be forgotten”.

We'll take a look at what that means for your backup files.

Acronis is pleased to announce that Ingram Micro has added the Acronis Backup Cloud solution to its Cloud Marketplace. As more and more companies deploy turnkey cloud services to simplify their data protection, resellers struggle to maintain these new revenue streams due to the resource intensive nature of provisioning, billing and managing their cloud services. Now, Acronis and Ingram partners have access to the ideal solution for maintaining their Cloud services business.

Faster, better, cheaper are the driving pillars that have enabled smartphones to control our lives, make drones a commodity, and bring self-driving cars to the horizon.  However, almost all of these great breakthroughs have downsides.

The same holds true for “Cloud”. It can mean many different things to different people, and the channel is no exception. For many managed service providers, cloud backup is the easiest and fastest way to elevate existing customers to cloud and grow customer base and establish significant incremental revenues.

Why do we tend to make things more difficult than they have to be? That was my thought when I started planning a set of blog posts describing new computing trends in a simple way.

Even though it is popular today, cloud computing is still a mystery for a lot of computer users. We hear about it here and there, but what is it? Why is it good for me personally or for my business?

Here is a quick analogy to simplify the concept of cloud:
