Acronis – Scuderia Toro Rosso Partnership

One year ago in Hungary, Acronis announced a long-term partnership with Scuderia Toro Rosso, becoming the first Singaporean company to sponsor an F1 racing team!

One year on, the partnership is growing stronger. Scuderia Toro Rosso has moved from the role of being a product supporter to using Acronis’ solutions itself, both trackside and in the factory.

Toro Rosso Access Advanced

Formula 1 teams share large amounts of data between racing locations, home base, and partners. Scuderia Toro Rosso is no exception. With a small army of trackside engineers and hundreds of devices following the racing calendar around the globe, the data flow never stops.

Some data, like telemetry, pumps through the standard channels for a live feed at the factory. Other information, race-specific calculations and sensitive data, may fall outside of the always-on telemetry stream and require extra attention. While there’s always been sufficient security in place, secure data exchange required manual setup, which prompted Scuderia Toro Rosso to deploy Acronis Access Advanced to streamline the process.

It’s Racing Time!

The start of the 2017 Grand Prix season is a big occasion for Acronis. We are proud of our fruitful relationship with Scuderia Toro Rosso and we’re excited about the new season. Even though we operate in different industries, we share common values of being #1, Fast, and Innovative.

Scuderia Toro Rosso STR12

Here are some insights from Ben Waterhouse, Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Deputy Technical Director who’s been involved with the STR12 project right from its inception.

Critical Role of IT in Formula 1

There aren’t many companies that are expected to push the limits of technological development and put their products on display in front of thousands of spectators and half a billion TV viewers multiple times every year.

Scuderia Toro Rosso is one of them. It’s one of the eleven Formula 1 teams that wheel out their state of the art racing equipment from the factories to the global arena of Grand Prix competitions more than 20 times a year. Every racing weekend thousands of hours of research and development, engineering, and manufacturing are compressed into two hours of high-speed performance on the track. It’s a show of technological excellence, innovation and teamwork.

VIDEO: Carlos Sainz of Scuderia Toro Rosso Hoping for Rain at the Brazilian GP

Video interview with Carlos Sainz at the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 2016.

Masha Krylova: We have Carlos Sainz here with us, a Formula 1 driver for Scuderia Toro Rosso. Carlos, thank you for your time. It’s your second time in Brazil, what are your thoughts about this track?

Carlos Sainz: Yes, my second race in Brazil. Last year we had a lot of reliability issues, but this year, hopefully, we got rid of them. It’s not a track that favors our car, but anyway, we are here to enjoy, to have fun, and have a good race tomorrow, knowing there is a chance of rain also.

Why Formula 1 Is Important, Even if You Are Not into Motorsports

For some, the beauty of Formula 1 is all about its sporting aspects. For others, it’s all about technology, the incredible innovation behind the world’s most technology-driven sport. But the reality is that you can’t separate the two. Formula 1 is at once about sport, technology and innovation. And what may seem like an expensive hobby for wealthy tinkerers and daring racers actually has a trickle-down effect on our everyday lives. Formula 1 is a massive research and development powerhouse. Technologies developed within the closed walls of F1 team factories find their way into other industries, making our lives simpler, safer and more efficient.

Here are a few obvious (and some not-so-obvious) examples of Formula 1 technology that has made its way into our everyday lives:

1. Tyres. Pirelli, the sole tyre supplier for all Formula 1 teams, has conducted an enormous amount of R&D over the years. The tyre technology developed for Formula 1 — soft tyres with more grip or hard tyres that last longer — is also used for road cars. If you have a set of Pirellis on your car outside, the Formula 1 technology has followed you home.
