Networking issue takes Facebook, subsidiaries offline

Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram were offline for 6 hours on Monday Oct 6, following a networking issue.

Apparently, a faulty Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) update removed Facebook from the map of the Internet, making it and its DNS servers no longer accessible by anyone. Other services such as WhatsApp and Instagram were offline as well, as they rely on Facebook's backend.

Although no data was leaked or lost, the outage was both embarrassing and expensive for Facebook. The stock price dropped by 5%, enough to lower CEO Mark Zuckerberg's net worth by around $7 billion.
