# Backed up is not the same as recoverable

Why backup validation is the step most businesses skip, and why that silence is dangerous.

The backup finished. The dashboard shows a green tick. You close the laptop and go home. **But what if that green tick is lying to you?**

It sounds dramatic. It is not. Across organisations of every size, backups complete successfully every night while quietly storing corrupted data, broken recovery chains, or in the worst cases, malware that hitched a ride before the snapshot was taken. Nobody knows. Nothing alerts. The tick stays green.

The problem only surfaces the moment you need the backup most.

_“A backup you haven’t validated is not a backup. It’s a hope.”_

## The problem with ‘completed’

A backup completing and a backup being recoverable are two entirely different things. There are three ways a backup can fail you silently:

**Silent data corruption.**Data degrades at the bit level over time without triggering any alerts. In healthcare, a corrupted diagnostic image or patient record can have serious consequences. In finance, a corrupted audit trail can mean a failed compliance audit. The file still exists. It just no longer contains what it should.

**Broken backup chains.**Most organisations use incremental or differential backups to save storage. Each recovery point depends on every link before it. One corrupted earlier backup silently breaks the entire chain, meaning the most recent snapshot you are relying on cannot actually be restored.

**Malware inside the backup.**Ransomware and other threats are designed to persist. If a machine was compromised before the backup ran, the backup captures the infection. Restoring it does not fix the problem. It reinstates it.

## What Acronis Backup Validation actually does

Acronis Backup Validation goes beyond confirming that a file exists. It applies up to three verification methods in sequence, each catching a different category of failure.

**Checksum verification**is the mathematical layer. It calculates a checksum for every recoverable data block and compares it to the original value recorded at backup time. If a single bit has changed, it shows up here. For incremental and differential backups, it validates the entire recovery chain, not just the latest point.

**VM heartbeat validation**takes it further. The agent boots the backup as a live virtual machine on ESXi or Hyper-V, then connects to VMware Tools or Hyper-V Integration Services to confirm the operating system actually started. If it does not respond, the agent retries every two minutes, up to five times, before marking the validation as failed.

**Screenshot validation**adds a visual layer powered by machine intelligence. While the VM boots, screenshots are captured and analysed automatically. If a login screen appears, that screenshot is attached to the recovery point as proof. If it does not, screenshots continue until the timeout period ends and the last one is attached. Every validated recovery point carries a timestamped visual confirmation, accessible in the Cyber Protect console for up to one year.

All three methods can run together within a single validation plan, scheduled independently from your backup plan so they run during off-peak hours without touching production workloads.

_Validation tells you whether your backup will work before a crisis forces you to find out the hard way._

## The cost of skipping it

For regulated industries, validation is no longer optional. DORA, HIPAA, NIS 2, PCI DSS and SOC 2 all require organisations to demonstrate that data can be reliably restored to a known state. A completed backup does not satisfy that requirement. A validated backup, with checksum evidence and timestamped screenshot confirmation, does.

For managed service providers (MSPs), validation is a differentiator. Showing clients a screenshot of their own systems booting cleanly from a backup is a more compelling proof of service than any SLA document.

For everyone else, it is simply the difference between knowing your data is safe and hoping it is.
