Becoming a trusted business partner: 5 partnership strategies for Australian MSPs

Clients increasingly need more than a list of tools. They need clear advice about which risks to address, which outcomes to prioritise and how technology supports the business.

A reliable service desk earns confidence. A trusted business partner earns a place in decisions about risk, growth and continuity. For Australian MSPs, that distinction matters because clients increasingly need more than a list of tools. They need clear advice about which risks to address, which outcomes to prioritise and how technology supports the business.

Australian Cyber Security Centre guidance encourages organizations to scrutinize the cybersecurity measures used in outsourced ICT services. That raises the standard for MSPs, but it also creates an opportunity. Providers that can explain risk, prove readiness and align service decisions with business priorities become harder to replace.

The following five strategies can help an MSP build that position deliberately.

1. Start with the client’s operating priorities

Trusted advisers begin with the business, not the product catalogue. Before recommending a service, understand how the client makes money, which workflows cannot stop, what data is most important and where change is planned.

A professional services firm may prioritise Microsoft 365 data protection and rapid access to client files. A manufacturer may focus on production availability, recovery dependencies and support for specialist systems. A growing multi-site business may need consistent endpoint management and security policies across every location.

Translate those priorities into a short technology roadmap. It should identify the business outcome, current exposure, agreed action, owner and review date. This makes the MSP’s value visible and gives future recommendations a clear commercial context.

Conversation starter: “Which business process would cause the most disruption if it became unavailable tomorrow?”

2. Make resilience measurable

Trust weakens when protection is described only through product features. Clients need to understand what can be recovered, how quickly it can be recovered and what the business should do during disruption.

Define recovery time and recovery point objectives for priority workloads. Test recovery against those objectives. Record dependencies, escalation paths and communication responsibilities. Then report the result in language business leaders can use: What was tested, what worked, what needs attention and what decision is required.

This approach moves the discussion from “backup completed” to “the business can recover its critical service within the agreed timeframe.” It also gives account reviews substance and creates a defensible basis for future investment.

3. Reduce complexity for clients and technicians

A broad service portfolio can support growth, but every additional console, contract and workflow also creates operational load. Complexity affects onboarding, training, alert handling, reporting and the consistency of the client experience.

Review the service stack against three questions: Does the capability improve the client outcome? Can technicians operate it efficiently? Can the MSP explain and price the service clearly? Where the answer is no, consolidation or process redesign may be more valuable than adding another tool.

Acronis Cyber Platform brings cybersecurity, data protection and management together in a multitenant platform for service providers. The strategic point is broader than any one platform: integration should reduce context switching and support repeatable delivery, not merely reduce the number of vendor logos on a slide.

4. Build a joint growth plan with key vendors

The best vendor relationship should improve more than procurement. Ask what the vendor will contribute to pipeline development, enablement and service design. Agree on target segments, campaign priorities, sales plays, training needs and measurable next steps for the quarter.

Useful support may include localised campaign assets, subject-matter experts for client events, coselling on selected opportunities and structured business reviews. The MSP still owns its market position and client relationship. The vendor adds expertise, reach and resources that make execution easier.

Treat the plan as a working document. Assign owners, set dates and review outcomes. A partnership becomes credible through completed actions, not portal access or a tier badge.

5. Create experiences that strengthen commercial relationships

Some business conversations need a setting beyond the meeting room. A relevant event can bring clients, prospects and partners together, give an MSP’s brand more visibility and create space for better conversations. The value comes from what surrounds the event: thoughtful invitations, clear account objectives and disciplined follow-up.

The Acronis #TeamUp Program and Acronis #SportsIgnite Program are designed to help MSPs use sports marketing opportunities to support brand awareness and business development. Depending on the opportunity, benefits can include sports and entertainment events, VIP hospitality, business development events and sports merchandise.

We help you open the door to the sports vertical, and we walk alongside you as you provide cybersecurity and IT services to your favorite sports team.

  • Start selling to sports clubs.
  • Bring your partners to sports events and VIP hospitality.
  • Display your logo on the stadium.
  • Let a sports team promote your business to other sponsors.
  • Enjoy sports merchandise with your logo.

Use these opportunities as part of an account-based plan. Invite people with a genuine business connection, brief the host team on each relationship and agree on the next step before the event. Hospitality can open a conversation. Relevance and follow-through turn it into growth.

Trust is a commercial discipline

Trusted partnership is not a softer alternative to technical excellence. It is how technical capability becomes business value. MSPs that understand client priorities, measure resilience, simplify delivery, plan with vendors and invest in relationships can compete on more than price.

Acronis believes vendors should invest alongside their partners. Whether your MSP already works with Acronis or is exploring a different kind of vendor relationship, the Acronis #TeamUp Program and Acronis #SportsIgnite Program offer a practical place to start.
