Ransomware protection is often presented as a contest between individual products. In practice, no single tool can cover the entire problem. Effective protection comes from a connected set of controls that prevents intrusions, identifies malicious behavior, protects recovery data and restores operations quickly after an attack. Ransomware protection software includes the tools and integrated platforms that provide those controls across endpoints, identities, email and backups.

The need for that layered approach is growing. Ransomware appeared in 48% of the breaches analyzed in the Verizon 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report, up from 44% the previous year. The report covered 22,000 confirmed breaches across 145 countries (Verizon, 2026). For IT teams, the decision is no longer whether ransomware protection is necessary. The harder question is which capabilities matter most and how to combine them without creating an unmanageable collection of consoles.

## What effective ransomware protection looks like in 2026

Modern ransomware moves faster than a response process built around manual triage. Attackers can compromise an environment, escalate privileges and begin encrypting data within hours. Protection therefore has to close the gap between the speed of the attack and the speed of detection, containment and recovery.

The strongest approaches share three characteristics. They look for malicious behavior instead of relying only on known signatures. They protect the backups that attackers increasingly try to destroy. They also shorten recovery from days to minutes where recovery conditions allow, providing a dependable path to a clean restore when prevention does not stop every stage of the attack.

Integration matters just as much as the individual controls. Organizations use an average of 83 security solutions from 29 vendors, while 52% of executives say fragmentation limits their ability to respond to cyberthreats (IBM Institute for Business Value and Palo Alto Networks, 2025). Every additional console creates another place for an alert to be missed, a policy to drift or a handoff to stall. Good ransomware protection reduces that complexity while covering the attack lifecycle from initial access through recovery.

Recovery is the final test. Prevention will eventually fail somewhere, whether through an unpatched vulnerability, a stolen credential or a new technique that evades existing controls. A product that detects an attack but cannot help restore clean systems is only half of a ransomware strategy.

## Three capabilities that separate strong protection from basic antivirus

AI-based behavioral detection, automatic rollback and immutable backup form the core of modern ransomware protection. Each addresses a different part of the attack.

Behavioral detection identifies suspicious actions, such as unauthorized mass encryption, even when the malicious file has never been seen before. Automatic rollback reverses file changes made before the attack was stopped. Immutability preserves a clean recovery copy that an attacker cannot encrypt or delete during the configured retention period.

Independent testing provides a useful measure of how these controls perform under pressure. In the AV-TEST Advanced Threat Protection evaluation published in 2026, [Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud)](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/) earned a protection score of 35 out of 35. It defended against all 10 advanced ransomware and infostealer scenarios tested on Windows 11 (AV-TEST, 2026). Because AV-TEST maps each scenario to the MITRE ATT&CK framework, the evaluation reflects defense against realistic living-off-the-land techniques rather than basic file scanning alone.

The practical lesson is to pair prevention with recovery. Detection without protected recovery data can still leave an organization facing a ransom demand. Backup without active detection can turn a preventable incident into a long rebuild. The most capable anti-ransomware software brings both functions into the same operating model.

## 10 ransomware protection approaches every IT team should evaluate

### 1. AI-based behavioral detection

Behavioral detection watches what a process does rather than asking only whether its signature matches a known threat. That distinction is critical because new and modified ransomware variants routinely evade signature-only antivirus. Among the controls in this list, behavioral detection is the single most important defense against those unfamiliar strains. An effective behavioral engine can recognize mass encryption, credential theft and other attack patterns in real time, then block the process before it completes.

[Acronis Active Protection](https://www.acronis.com/en/technology/active-protection/) is the behavioral anti-ransomware engine built into [Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud)](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/). It monitors process and file activity in real time, halts suspicious encryption and reverts affected files from a local cache. That rollback capability can reverse the impact of an attack almost immediately after the malicious process is stopped.

### 2. Endpoint detection and response

Endpoint detection and response, or EDR, gives IT teams the visibility needed to investigate an intrusion and contain it before it spreads. EDR records endpoint activity, connects related events into attack chains and supports response actions such as isolating a device or terminating a malicious process.

The 2025 MITRE ATT&CK Enterprise Evaluation tested 11 vendors, including Acronis, against scenarios inspired by the Scattered Spider and Mustang Panda threat groups. MITRE publishes the results without ranking the participating vendors (MITRE, 2025). [Acronis EDR](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/security-edr/), built into [Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud)](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/), maps detections to the MITRE ATT&CK framework and supports isolation, remediation and integrated rollback and recovery. This helps smaller teams move from investigation to response in minutes rather than hours.

### 3. Network segmentation

Segmentation limits the distance ransomware can travel after compromising one device. Separating the network into controlled zones makes it harder for attackers to move laterally toward domain controllers, file servers and backup repositories.

CISA reinforced this approach in its August 2026 #StopRansomware advisory on Gunra ransomware, recommending network segmentation to hamper movement from initially compromised devices to other organizational systems (CISA, 2026). Acronis supports segmentation-friendly architectures by keeping backup data in isolated cloud storage and providing access-separated, multitenant management controls.

### 4. Immutable backup

Immutable backup is the recovery layer attackers cannot be allowed to reach. Ransomware groups now search for backup infrastructure early in an intrusion because destroying recovery copies increases the pressure to pay. In 2025, 89% of organizations affected by ransomware reported that their backup repositories had been targeted and 34% said backup data had been modified or deleted (Veeam, 2025). CISA similarly recommends offline, immutable backups kept in a physically separate, segmented location (CISA, 2026).

Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud) supports immutable storage in the Acronis Cloud. During the configured retention window, backups cannot be encrypted or deleted by ransomware running on the protected endpoint. Immutability provides a clean basis for recovery, although it cannot undo data exfiltration that occurred before the attack was detected.

### 5. Patch and vulnerability management

Patching removes the known weaknesses attackers use to enter an environment and move through it. Exploited vulnerabilities became the leading initial access vector in 2026, accounting for 31% of breaches. At the same time, only 26% of CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities were fully remediated in 2025, down from 38%, while the median time to complete patching rose from 32 days to 43 days (Verizon, 2026). That delay gives attackers a large and predictable window.

[Acronis RMM](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/rmm-solution/) adds vulnerability assessment, patch management, scripting and endpoint management to Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud). MSPs can prioritize weaknesses by severity and automate patching from the same console, including prepatch backups that provide a recovery point before changes are applied.

### 6. MFA and identity protection

Ransomware operators increasingly log in with stolen credentials instead of breaking through a perimeter control. Multi-factor authentication makes those credentials far less useful. Microsoft research found that MFA was associated with a 99.22% reduction in account-compromise risk across the population studied and a 98.56% reduction among accounts with leaked credentials (Microsoft, 2023). Those figures measure account compromise rather than ransomware reduction directly, but compromised identities are a common entry point for ransomware.

Acronis helps MSPs improve Microsoft 365 security posture and supports MFA enforcement and access-control policies across managed environments.

### 7. Email security

The inbox remains one of the most productive paths into an organization. Phishing messages deliver malicious payloads, steal credentials and create the trusted access attackers later use to deploy ransomware. Phishing accounted for 83% of all email threats in the second half of 2025. It was also the leading initial attack vector against MSPs, representing 52% of cases (Acronis Threat Research Unit, 2026). Because so many attacks begin in the inbox, strong filtering can pay for itself quickly.

[Acronis Email Security](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/email-security/), powered by Perception Point, helps block phishing, business email compromise, malware and zero-day threats before they reach client inboxes.

### 8. Security awareness training

Technology cannot filter every convincing message or prevent every risky decision. Security awareness training gives employees the context to recognize phishing and social-engineering attempts before they become incidents. The benefit is strongest when training is continuous rather than limited to an annual exercise.

KnowBe4 reported that sustained training reduced the global phish-prone rate from a 33.1% baseline to 4.1% after 12 months. That represents an 86% reduction, with the largest gains occurring between month three and month 12 (KnowBe4, 2025). [Acronis Security Awareness Training](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/security-awareness-training/) gives MSPs a multitenant platform for managing phishing simulations and training programs from the Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud) console.

### 9. Incident response planning

An incident response plan determines whether a ransomware attack remains a contained event or becomes a business-ending crisis. The plan should define who makes decisions, how systems are isolated, how evidence is preserved and how recovery begins. It also needs to be rehearsed so the team is not inventing its process during the attack.

Organizations that used security AI and automation extensively reported average breach costs about $1.9 million lower than organizations that did not. Their average cost was $3.62 million compared with $5.52 million, and their breach lifecycle was 80 days shorter (IBM Cost of a Data Breach, 2025). Acronis supports incident-response execution through integrated recovery, disaster recovery and remediation workflows, allowing containment and restore steps to be coordinated from the same console.

### 10. Integrated cyber protection platforms

An integrated platform connects the other nine approaches and reduces the gaps created by separate products. Platform consolidation has become a clear market direction. Gartner attributed the strongest security-software growth in 2025 to vendors that pursued platform consolidation and integrated generative AI into their portfolios (Gartner, 2026).

Fewer consoles can mean fewer blind spots, more consistent policies and faster response. [Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud)](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/) combines backup, disaster recovery, anti-malware, anti-ransomware, EDR, vulnerability and patch management, email security and endpoint management in one MSP-native console.

## Endpoint detection and integrated data protection solve different problems

Endpoint detection and integrated data protection are sometimes compared as though an organization must choose between them. In reality, they cover different halves of the ransomware problem.

EDR is designed to identify malicious activity on endpoints, connect events into an attack chain and support fast containment. It does not, by itself, guarantee that encrypted data can be restored. Integrated data protection adds backup, immutability and rapid recovery, making it possible to reverse the damage when an attack passes through the detection layer.

Buying these capabilities separately can recreate the fragmentation that slows incident response and raises operating costs. When detection and recovery are part of one platform, an action such as isolating an endpoint can flow directly into the next step, such as restoring verified clean files. Teams do not have to move between vendors, reconcile separate policies or wait for two support organizations to coordinate.

A useful buying test is to ask a vendor to demonstrate the complete workflow. The demonstration should show how an alert becomes a contained endpoint and then a verified clean restore. When that path crosses three products and two support teams, the practical recovery time is likely to suffer.

## Why unified backup and security works for SMBs and MSPs

Small and midsize businesses rarely have enough security staff to operate dozens of disconnected tools well. Tool sprawl consumes budget, creates blind spots and turns incident response into a series of manual handoffs. A single platform that covers prevention, detection and recovery gives a lean team enterprise-grade defense without requiring it to build and maintain a complex integration layer.

For MSPs, consolidation also changes the economics of service delivery. A multitenant console allows one team to protect more clients, standardize policies and add recurring security revenue without onboarding another set of products. [Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud)](https://www.acronis.com/en/products/cloud/cyber-protect/) is designed for this model, combining cybersecurity, backup and endpoint management so service providers can deliver ransomware protection from one place. The platform holds a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from more than 1,400 verified G2 reviews (G2, 2026).

The buying principle is straightforward: consolidate where it improves operations, treat behavioral detection and immutable backup as non-negotiable and evaluate vendors on their ability to recover clean systems, not only on the alerts they generate.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best ransomware protection software?

The best ransomware protection software combines AI-based behavioral detection, EDR, immutable backup and fast recovery in one platform. No single feature is sufficient on its own. Integrated solutions such as Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud) rank highly for lean IT teams and MSPs because they can prevent, detect and reverse attacks from one console.

### Is antivirus enough to stop ransomware?

No. Antivirus relies heavily on signatures for known threats, which means novel and modified ransomware can evade it. Modern protection adds behavioral detection, endpoint detection and response, immutable backup and rehearsed recovery. Layering those controls is what limits both the chance of a successful attack and the damage when one gets through.

### Can ransomware infect backups?

Yes. Attackers deliberately target backups to increase the pressure to pay, and 89% of ransomware victims reported that their backup repositories were targeted (Veeam, 2025). Immutable, offline backups stored separately prevent an endpoint attack from encrypting or deleting the recovery copy, which is why CISA includes them in its ransomware guidance.

### How do MSPs deliver ransomware protection at scale?

MSPs scale ransomware protection by consolidating controls into one multitenant platform. A unified console for backup, anti-ransomware, EDR, patch management and email security allows a small team to apply consistent protection across many clients. That reduces complexity, accelerates response and supports recurring security services without adding a separate vendor for every function.
