## Frequently asked questions

### What is disaster recovery as a service?

DRaaS provides cloud infrastructure and tools to run critical workloads when the primary environment is unavailable. Acronis combines recovery compute, storage, networking and orchestration with backup, helping teams restore services after failures, attacks or site disruptions.

### How does DRaaS differ from backup or BaaS?

Backup preserves data for restoration. DRaaS adds an alternate environment where systems can run, plus failover, testing and failback. Backup protects the data; disaster recovery prepares the infrastructure and process to resume operations.

### How can MSPs extend disaster recovery to Microsoft Azure?

With Acronis Cyber Platform (formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud), MSPs can recover eligible workloads into Azure using backups stored in Azure, Acronis Cloud, or partner-hosted storage. Cold DR creates recovery compute only when needed, while runbooks, test failovers, and failback are managed from Acronis. MSPs can also use Azure networking to fit customer environments. [Explore disaster recovery planning](https://www.acronis.com/en/solutions/disaster-recovery/)

### How should I define RTO and RPO for my recovery plan?

RTO is the target time to restore a service, while RPO is the maximum acceptable age of recovered data. Define both based on business priorities, application dependencies and acceptable downtime or data loss. Use backup and restore for less time-sensitive workloads, and cloud failover where faster recovery is required. Assign application owners, agree on who declares an incident, and test failover regularly, especially after significant changes. Retain test results for reviews and audits. [Explore business continuity](https://www.acronis.com/en/solutions/business-continuity/)

### Can I test failover without disrupting production?

Yes. Test failovers run in an isolated environment. Automated weekly or monthly tests check server startup; runbook and application tests help validate dependencies.

### Which workloads are supported?

Acronis supports Windows and Linux physical servers, virtual machines and cloud VMs, including VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments.

### Where will my recovery systems run?

Recovery systems run in the Acronis Cloud recovery location configured for your service. Available regions depend on the deployment and should be confirmed against data-residency requirements.

### How is disaster recovery priced?

Acronis Cloud pricing reflects DR storage, active compute and optional public IP addresses alongside applicable product licensing. Tests use compute resources too.

### Do I need Acronis Backup first?

Yes. Acronis Disaster Recovery uses eligible Acronis image-based backups as recovery points. For Acronis Cloud recovery, protect workloads in the appropriate Acronis Cloud storage.

### Can I return workloads to the original environment?

Yes. Failback returns workloads from the recovery site to physical or virtual infrastructure. Incremental failback transfers changed data while the cloud workload continues running.

### Can an IT team buy disaster recovery without an MSP?

Yes. IT teams can purchase disaster recovery for a supported cloud deployment of Acronis Cyber Protect. Small businesses can start with their most critical servers and expand coverage as recovery requirements grow.

### How does disaster recovery fit into a business continuity plan?

DR restores IT services; business continuity also covers people, communications and operational processes. Set recovery priorities, define responsibilities and test access to critical applications.

## Bring operations back without building a second site

When a server fails or a site becomes unavailable, people need their applications back. Acronis adds cloud recovery infrastructure and orchestration to your backup strategy, so you can prepare for downtime without maintaining a duplicate production environment.

### Shorten business disruption

Fail over critical servers to Acronis Cloud while you repair the original environment. Keep essential applications accessible and give your team time to restore normal operations.

### Make recovery repeatable

Replace improvised recovery steps with tested runbooks. Coordinate application dependencies and check readiness before an incident puts your plan under pressure.

### Do more with one platform

Build on your existing Acronis backups and protection agents. Centralize recovery operations and security context, reducing tool switching and service-delivery overhead.

## Three reasons to prepare for faster recovery

* 1 in 5 reported outage costs above $1 million One in five surveyed data center operators said their most recent impactful outage cost more than US$1 million. ([Uptime Institute: Annual Outage Analysis 2026](https://intelligence.uptimeinstitute.com/resource/annual-outage-analysis-2026))
* 42% experienced a significant disruption In a global disaster recovery survey, 42% of respondents reported a significant disaster, outage or business disruption within the previous two years. ([Forrester/DRJ: The State of Disaster Recovery Preparedness 2026](https://user-35215390377.cld.bz/Disaster-Recovery-Journal-Spring-2026))
* 55% recovery success with frequent testing Organizations testing at least monthly reported successful cyber recovery 55% of the time, compared with 35% among those testing less often. ([Dell: Global Cyber Resilience Insights, 2026](https://www.dell.com/en-us/blog/why-cyber-recovery-testing-fails-and-how-to-start/))

## A cloud disaster recovery service built into your protection

Move from protected data to running systems through one connected workflow. Acronis brings cloud compute, storage, networking and disaster recovery software together.

### From backup to running systems

* **Protect:** Create image-based backups of critical workloads in Acronis Cloud and schedule them to match your data loss tolerance.
* **Prepare:** Configure recovery servers, compute resources and network access. These cloud counterparts are ready to start from your backups when needed.
* **Fail over:** Select a recovery point and start a server or execute a runbook to bring several systems online in sequence.
* **Fail back:** Transfer workloads and changes back after the original environment is ready, then complete a controlled switchover.

![Image 4: From backup to running systems](https://staticfiles.acronis.com/images/content/d82bdd2a153a4f245bd793cc5bf09b0f.png)

### Recover applications in the right order

Bring directory services and databases online before the applications that depend on them. Build runbooks with ordered steps, parallel actions and completion checks, then execute the plan from the console when recovery is needed.

Run the same sequence in test mode to uncover missing dependencies. Follow execution progress and history to see what completed and where intervention is required.

![Image 5: Recover applications in the right order](https://staticfiles.acronis.com/images/content/283c767fc628de7067fbc2abb524d8e2.png)

### Test recovery before the business depends on it

Run test failovers in an isolated environment without interrupting production. Schedule automated tests weekly or monthly to check whether recovery servers start successfully, using screenshot analysis and reported results.

Combine automated boot checks with application and network testing to validate the complete service. A successful boot is a useful checkpoint; a working business application is the outcome that matters.

### Recover with security context. Return with less disruption.

Combine disaster recovery with Acronis backup scanning to identify recovery points with detected malware before selecting a point for failover. Immutable backup storage and encryption help protect the recovery copies you rely on.

When production is ready, use incremental failback to transfer changed data while the cloud workload continues running. Monitor transfer progress and estimated downtime, then schedule the final switchover.

## Choose the recovery approach that fits the workload

Compare cloud disaster recovery with building and operating a secondary site or relying on backup restoration alone.

| | DRaaS in Acronis Cloud | DIY secondary site | Backup only |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cost model | Service and usage charges; no second site to build | Infrastructure, licenses and ongoing site costs | Backup software and storage; recovery infrastructure still needed |
| Recovery time | Cloud failover; timing depends on the tested configuration | Depends on replication and standby design | Depends on restore volume and available infrastructure |
| Testing | Isolated failover tests and runbooks | Build and maintain your own test process | Validate backups and test restores |
| Staff effort | One console for backup and DR | Operate the secondary environment and recovery tools | Manage backup plus system restoration |
| Site separation | Off-site cloud recovery location | Arrange a separate location | Only if off-site copies are configured |
