Conversion to a virtual machine with a separate conversion plan
To convert a disk-level backup to a virtual machine, you must create a conversion plan.
You can use this plan to migrate a virtual machine to a non-original hypervisor. For example, you can convert a backup of a VMware virtual machine to a Proxmox virtual machine.
Also, with a conversion plan, you can update the resulting virtual machine after each incremental or differential backup.
Incremental updates are not available for virtual machines that are created by VMware Workstation and VHDX files options. For more information, see Types of conversion to virtual machine.

Cyber Frame
Cyber Frame Cloud does not provide licenses or subscriptions for virtual machines that you recover or convert from a source outside Cyber Frame Cloud. Only virtual machines that you create from Cyber Frame Cloud Windows Server images, other than the BYOL images, receive a Windows Server license. This virtual machine keeps its Windows Server license when you migrate, recover, or convert it within Cyber Frame Cloud, including to another cluster.
You are responsible for the license or subscription of the operating system, and of any other commercial software on the machine. For example, Windows Server or a commercial firewall appliance. Activate or register the software yourself, and ensure that each license or subscription permits use in a shared, multi-tenant cloud environment under the current terms of its vendor. To bring your own Windows Server licenses to Cyber Frame Cloud under the Microsoft Flexible Virtualization Benefit, you must hold eligible Windows Server subscription licenses, or Windows Server licenses with active Software Assurance.
- In the Cyber Protect console, go to Management > Conversion to VM.
- Click Create plan.
-
To rename the plan, click the pencil icon, enter a new name, and then click OK.
- In Convert to, select Cyber Frame.
-
In Project, select the target project, specify the virtual machine name, and then click OK.
In the target selection, expand the cluster and the domain, and then select a project. All Cyber Frame networks and the additional settings become available only after you select a project.
A cluster or a domain is not a valid target. If you start the operation with a cluster selected, CyberFramePublic is the only available network, and the operation fails with the error "Failed to allocate the network(s)".
A private network that you created recently might not appear in the list immediately, because the discovery of new resources is delayed. If the network is missing, wait, and then refresh the list.
- In Agent, select the agent that will perform the conversion.
-
In Items to convert, select one or more backups to convert, and then click Done.
To switch between selecting individual backups and backup locations, click Locations / Backups.
