Recovering a physical machine as a virtual machine

You can recover a disk-level backup of a physical machine to a virtual machine. This operation is called cross-platform recovery (machine migration). For more information, see Cross-platform recovery.

Prerequisites

  • An agent for the relevant hypervisor is installed in your environment. For example, recovery to a VMware ESXi virtual machine requires Agent for VMware that is installed and registered in the Cyber Protect console.

To recover a physical machine as a virtual machine

The procedures are listed according to the type of the target virtual machine.

VMware ESXi

  1. In the Cyber Protect console, do one of the following:

Cyber Frame

Cyber Frame Cloud does not provide licenses or subscriptions for virtual machines that you recover or convert from a source outside Cyber Frame Cloud. Only virtual machines that you create from Cyber Frame Cloud Windows Server images, other than the BYOL images, receive a Windows Server license. This virtual machine keeps its Windows Server license when you migrate, recover, or convert it within Cyber Frame Cloud, including to another cluster.

You are responsible for the license or subscription of the operating system, and of any other commercial software on the machine. For example, Windows Server or a commercial firewall appliance. Activate or register the software yourself, and ensure that each license or subscription permits use in a shared, multi-tenant cloud environment under the current terms of its vendor. To bring your own Windows Server licenses to Cyber Frame Cloud under the Microsoft Flexible Virtualization Benefit, you must hold eligible Windows Server subscription licenses, or Windows Server licenses with active Software Assurance.
