Acronis® and A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute Launch Joint Research in Singapore

Singapore, February 15, 2016 - Acronis®, a global leader in hybrid cloud data protection, today announced the launch of a joint research project between Acronis' R&D centre and A*STAR's Data Storage Institute (DSI) in Singapore, aimed at pushing the limits of data protection innovation and setting new standards in efficiency, security, availability, and accessibility of cloud-based storage.

The joint research project focuses on scalable deduplication of distributed data storage, which is a necessary technology to eliminate redundant data and reduce cloud storage footprints. Preliminary studies indicate that there is a potential to reduce stored data volumes by half, which is directly beneficial to datacenter providers, data protection companies and the industry in general.

The joint research project will also help advance scientific discovery and contribute to the development of the research community in data storage.

The research represents the first joint project between Acronis' R&D centre in Singapore, the company's core research facility for data security and storage innovation, and A*STAR, a leading public sector agency that spearheads economic oriented research to advance scientific discovery and develop innovative technologies. Acronis is committed to growing collaboration with DSI and other A*STAR institutes in the areas of mutual interest, planning to invest over S$20 million to support the development of new technologies.

"Acronis is committed to advancing the development of complete data protection solutions, which includes innovative storage solutions. We are honored to work with A*STAR in the area of distributed data storage to address the critical need for cutting-edge technology and increased storage capacity to meet growing data protection demands worldwide. To further advance towards this goal, we are planning to launch additional joint research projects with our Singapore partners in the coming months", said Mark Shmulevich, Acronis' chief strategy and operations officer.

With its international headquarters in Singapore, Acronis established a new R&D Centre in 2015 to expand its research efforts in a country that has top-notch talent, world-class universities, and an innovation-focused government.

The joint research project with DSI is the first step in building local research capabilities for Acronis in Singapore. The initial core project group will be supervised by Acronis and includes five engineers. Acronis has a number of employment opportunities for highly skilled professionals and software engineers at the R&D centre and the company in general.

"Acronis is developing into a multi-billion dollar global storage technology leader with international headquarters and a global R&D centre in Singapore. This is only possible in a productive environment where there is a tight collaboration between science, technology, and education. Singapore is a unique country for universities and other institutes of higher learning, with A*STAR and state-run programs like Smart Nation, putting it at the level of leading countries in the world for its potential for technology innovation," said Serg Bell, CEO and co-founder of Acronis.

"Our joint research collaboration with a leader like Acronis will catalyze the development of emerging technologies not only in Singapore but also on the global market, advancing our position as a key R&D hub in the region." said Dr. Tan Yong Tsong, covering Executive Director, DSI, said.
