They recently announced they were retiring thanks to the money they’ve made encrypting victims’ computers. At the beginning of June, operators of the notorious GandCrab strain of ransomware announced that “all good things come to an end” and they are ceasing their operations. Unfortunately the success they reported will likely provide a roadmap for other cybercriminals that will continue for a long time.

On Tuesday, October 24, 2017, a new ransomware sample called Bad Rabbit hit Russia, Ukraine, Türkiye, Germany, Bulgaria, USA, and Japan. Russia and Ukraine were hit the most as the infection started through some hacked Russian news websites. Russian media agencies Interfax and Fontanka, as well as transportation organizations in Ukraine including the Odessa airport, Kiev subway were among the first to catch the infection.
