What VDI Solutions Are Overlooking in a BYOD World
Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) has been around for years, but the high cost of deployment and issues of scale and performance have traditionally kept most small and mid-size enterprises from adopting the technology. But, the recent boom in mobile technology – along with dramatic improvements in VDI – has changed the landscape a bit. With BYOD becoming more prevalent, some are pushing VDI as a solution to access their work “computer” from any device and any location.

What’s Your BYOD Prescription?
With 81 percent of employees bringing personal devices into the workplace, it is no secret that the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) phenomenon has set up shop in the corner office of the enterprise. And, with 60 percent of physicians using their mobile phone in the workplace on a daily basis, BYOD has clearly already checked itself into the healthcare industry, as well.

PRISM Exposes Enterprise Risks

PRISM Exposes Enterprise Risks
An article in the Guardian last week revealed the U.S. government's PRISM program. The article outlined the government's alleged monitoring of communications at the largest Internet providers (seemingly with the help of these providers). This list of Internet providers includes Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL, and Apple. Now, I want to point out that these are all allegations and that none of this has been verified yet. However, it certainly raises a lot of questions. I wanted to hone in one of the areas that I took note of. There was a mention in this report of other providers the government wanted to monitor, including Dropbox. This again exposes some of the risks that are faced not only by consumers using Dropbox (and similar services) but also the exposure that enterprises and enterprise users face when using these types of services. Many enterprises turn a blind eye towards a lot of this use but it represents a serious risk and raises many questions:

Difficult Made Simple: Virtualization
In this modern computing world with multitudes of various trends and innovations, we sometimes find ourselves lost in between new technologies, terminologies and words. Why do we tend to make things more difficult than they have to be? That was my thought when I started a set of blog posts describing the new computing trends in a simple way. Here is another trend that I would like to simplify – virtualization.

Wired Up!
How can we keep data secure and protected while allowing employees to work on whatever device makes them most productive? This is a topic that is top of mind for many IT departments as mobile devices and Macs infiltrate the enterprise, and something I discussed in an article featured on Wired.com and Wired’s Innovation Insights.

What RPO Really Means
In a backup world, Recovery Point Objective (RPO) defines points you can recover to. For example, doing hourly backups will ensure that you can always recover to a state that is no later than an hour before a disaster. This is usually referred to as “one hour RPO.” But this is not enough. What if you need a file that was deleted a month ago? One-hour-old backup will not help: You need at least a month-old backup, or a year-old backup.

Cloud-Enabled, Dual-Destination Backup
Data is the lifeblood of any business, and it’s growing at lightning speed year-over-year. In fact, it’s estimated that five exabytes of data are created every two days! But, as important as all this data is, could the majority of organizations honestly answer that they feel confident in the protection and constant availability of their mission-critical data? What about the company data employees store on personal devices like smartphones and tablets? Is it safe from security breaches, malware and malicious hacker attacks?

In this modern computing world with a multitude of various trends and innovations, we sometimes find ourselves lost in between new technologies, terminologies and words. Why do we tend to make things more difficult than they have to be? That was my thought when I started planning a set of blog posts describing new computing trends in a simple way.

No Rest for the Wicked! Mobility Goes Global, MobileIron and Other Good Stuff!
We’ve had a couple of busy weeks in mobility. We had two regional launches of mobilEcho and activEcho – one in Munich, Germany and the other one in Tokyo, Japan. Both of these speak to the global nature of the customer problems we are trying to solve with our mobilEcho and activEcho solutions – how do mobile workers safely access corporate content on their mobile devices, how do employees securely share and collaborate and files, and how do they get access to all their files across all their devices? This is what we do! Said more simply, we provide every time, everywhere access, sharing and syncing of the critical data that drives your enterprise. And, like I said, these are universal problems that cut across almost all vertical markets and job roles.

Enterprise Mobility Security and Management Policies
Today’s countless mobile devices present tangible opportunities to drive measurable and substantial value for the enterprise. Field service workers, executives on the go, sales reps, and project managers all have a need for mobile access to email, applications, enterprise data and files. There’s no question that the advent of the iPad, iPhone and other mobile devices brings substantial benefits to the enterprise. However, these benefits also come with new security risks that enterprise IT departments must be ever vigilant about, lest critical data be compromised.
