Local cleanup plans

Cleanup is an operation that deletes outdated backups according to the retention rules. You configure it in a local cleanup plan.

A local cleanup plan runs on a local agent that you select, which is a protection agent that is installed on a workload. The plan can delete backups in any supported location, including the cloud storage. Local cleanup plans apply only to agents and workloads, not to cloud-to-cloud backups.

Local cleanup plans are different from cloud cleanup plans. A cloud cleanup plan runs on the cloud agent and deletes only orphaned Microsoft 365 archives. For more information, see Creating a cloud cleanup plan.

Supported locations for local cleanup plans

Local cleanup plans support all backup locations, except for NFS folders and Secure Zone. This list does not apply to cloud cleanup plans, which support only Microsoft 365 backups in the cloud storage.
