IT security professionals often cringe in amusement when cybercrime-themed novels appear on bestseller lists, like “The President is Missing” by former US President Bill Clinton and fiction author James Patterson. Its plot centers on a “devastating stealth wiper virus” called Dark Ages, likely a nod to recent real-world ransomware outbreaks. But this is entertainment, not a serious work of scholarship. If you are worrying about a cyberattack that can only be stopped by a superhero, you hopefully are reclined and sipping a piña colada, not thinking about actual IT security strategy.

Now that the U.S. and North Korean officials have left Singapore, the pundits are debating the effectiveness of the recent nuclear weapons summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un. Yet despite the multiple areas of concern covered during the summit, there’s one security topic that wasn’t addressed by either side – cyber warfare. In fact, just three days after the summit, North Korea was again accused of launching a new attack as the Typeframe malware strain was uncovered. Given our role as a global leader in cyber protection, Acronis was hopeful that the negotiations would address these concerns. The experts at Acronis’ Singaporean Security Research Centre consider cyber warfare an unfortunate omission from these talks.
Photo credit: @MandyCNBC The 3,000 journalists covering the historic Trump-Kim Summit all received a goody bag that included a bottle of water, a hand-held fan with Kim’s face printed on it, and a guidebook to Sentosa island, the resort where the talks are taking place. Also included was a USB-powered fan to help cool the reporters down while they typed their stories in the sweltering heat of Singapore. While some journalists considered it a thoughtful gift, many of those who cover the cybersecurity beat saw a potential threat.
