Colonial Pipeline operators face nearly $1 million penalty

In the wake of last year's DarkSide ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline that caused fuel shortages across the U.S. East Coast, the company is facing regulatory fines of $986,000.

Colonial Pipeline is the largest pipeline operator in the country, and has been accused of several violations that likely led to vulnerabilities being exploited in the attack. Possible issues could include data not being entered into the company's Safety Lifecycle Management (SLM) system; a lack of records proving safety alarm verifications of as many as 87 sensors; and failure to follow other verification, documentation, and compliance procedures.

The Active Protection in Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud detects and blocks ransomware, securing your systems and data while also keeping your company safe from the financial and reputational damage that comes when falling victim to such attacks. Should normal operations be interrupted for any reason, the disaster recovery capabilities ensure downtime is minimized.
