Summit Interview Series: Jamison West

The host of the Business of Tech podcast, Dave Sobel, recently interviewed Jamison West during the Acronis #CyberFit Miami Summit in October 2021. West can best be described as a serial entrepreneur, strategic coach, and now, author of the book, “The Emotional Side to Selling Your Business.” Sobel and West connected at the #CyberFit Summit to talk more about the emotional aspects related to selling a small business.

West had been in the MSP business for 21 years, where he acquired four different MSPs and grew the business from eight to 40 employees before selling himself. Along the way, he learned many valuable lessons, most notably how difficult it is to combine different work cultures and align his expectations with employees’ behaviors – often when the two were in conflict.

This experience led him to write his book, but also to see if he could help coach others who may be going through the same process and without a lot of helpful resources. “There are so many books out there that help with things like business valuation but none that address the feelings related to the process of raising something from its infancy and then selling it,” West explained.

West now focused on helping his clients build and understand different cultures, especially when acquiring new companies or understanding how different employees may think or behave.

He also helps his clients take a big-picture, strategic view about the process of selling their business. “Every owner is going to exit the business at some point, whether it’s voluntary or not,” he said. “We help our clients start with long-term legacy planning and encourage them to identify their most important goals. From there, we work backwards to develop sales and revenue goals that align with their vision, and hopefully, deliver the results they’re looking for.”
