BlackMatter ransomware claims new high-value targets

The BlackMatter ransomware gang has carried out successful attacks against two new high-value targets: New Cooperative and Marketron.

Marketron serves more than 6,000 customers in the media industry and has an estimated annual revenue of $25.5 million. New Cooperative, a farm service provider with an estimated annual revenue of between $500 million and $1 billion, had 1,000 GB of data stolen; the attackers are demanding $5.9 million in ransom payments.

Notably, New Cooperative is among the "16 critical sectors" outlined by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). This label describes industries that "are considered so vital to the United States that their incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination thereof."

BlackMatter has hit many other targets in the last month, including a wine and spirits company, an investment banker service provider, and Olympus. Regardless of the industry targeted or the ransomware gang involved, Acronis Cyber Protect's Active Protection recognizes and stops all forms of ransomware before they can impact your systems.
