Apple in the Enterprise – The Mac is Back! Well, it Never Really Went Away
I recently caught this InfoWorld article on Macs in the enterprise. The article actually mentions Acronis’ newest offering to provide backup of Macs, but the broader point is about the increasing acceptance of Macs in the workplace. We have been involved in the Mac market (through our acquisition of GroupLogic) for over 10 years. Our ExtremeZ-IP® product is the premiere solution for providing seamless integration for Macs into enterprise server environments. Said more simply, Macs and Windows don’t always play nicely together when it comes to Macs accessing files on corporate file servers; we make all those problems disappear. And there are some very interesting trends happening in the enterprise Mac market.

I Don’t Care How it Works, I Just Want My Data!
My friend, Alexy, just reminded me how easy it is to solve problems when you have a lot of tools at hand. The specific problem of the moment is how to back up data when you are always on the go. You may not want to use a traditional backup/recovery product because you may not always have external drives or networks available, and you may travel to so many time zones that you never know when to schedule the backups. Yes, if you remember, you plug in a USB drive and copy files to it, but sometimes you do not have the time to do that – you might just have a few quick minutes in Starbucks.

What Backup Vendors Don’t Tell You: Virtual Machine Backup is Not Complete
Solutions are developed to address problems. The bigger people think something is a problem, the more demand there is for a solution. That is why the majority of marketing materials out there are built around educating their target audience about a pain point, and offering a solution. This is how we learned that we need to freshen our mouths with chewing gums, protect computers from malware with antiviruses or backup data to ensure recovery after a server crash. However, no company will talk about problems they don’t have solutions for, and, in the backup world, it means that there may be risks you’re not aware of, and consequently, not protected from.

Is There Ever a “Right” Time for an Outage?
Like many of you, I regularly read the tech press. And one thing that always interests me is outages. Being a Fellow here at Acronis, I am especially interested in outages that could have either easily been avoided or remediated rapidly. Most people in the tech industry were aware of the recent Amazon outage. But I was much more interested in the 18-minute Google Mail outage that happened two weeks before Christmas. To make a long story short, Google rolled out a routine load balancer update. There are fail safes and monitors, but stuff happens and the sequence was: 0845PT apply the patch, 0906 see the problem, 0913 revert the update, 0916 all back to normal.

When I think about backing up data, I don’t think about the features of a particular product. Instead, I think about the problem I am trying to solve and the right solution to do the job. When thinking about backups and eliminating a single point of failure, or creating a ‘Plan B’ disaster recovery location, the cloud comes to mind as the solution.

Acronis and Redmond Magazine Survey: Tape Unreliable, Cloud Backup on the Rise
Gone are the days when tape backups kept IT sleeping soundly. In a new survey from Acronis, conducted by Redmond Magazine, 75 percent of organizations experienced tape failure in the last year – an unacceptable rate, calling out the dangers of a single point of failure. One form of backup, whether physical or virtual, isn’t enough to guarantee uptime and business continuity. That explains why 59 percent of survey respondents are looking for ways to eliminate this single point of failure, with many looking to off-site cloud solutions for more secure data protection.

2013: The Year IT Becomes as Invisible as the Internet
How often do you hear someone say, “I’m on the Internet”? Probably not as often in recent years, as the Internet has evolved to become such an essential part of our daily lives that we take it for granted.  In other words, the Internet has become invisible (or unnoticeable)… and before long, IT services will become just as invisible.  Our SVP of Strategy and CMO Scott Crenshaw recently discussed the future of ‘invisible’ IT in both Data Center Knowledge and VMblog, noting that the exciting reality and full business value of trends like the cloud, big data and BYOD will finally emerge in 2013. In the New Year, invisible IT will offer users unprecedented data access through more scalable, reliable and cost-efficient IT services.
