Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on August 29 as a Category 4 storm. Ida was strong enough to temporarily reverse the flow of the Mississippi River as it brought as much as 2 feet of rain in some areas, and a 7-foot storm surge.
The storm left nearly 1 million people without power in Louisiana, and brought widespread flooding across the state as well as in Mississippi. Throughout the region, trees were knocked down and buildings were damaged or destroyed.
Even in an area that regularly sees hurricanes, it's rare to see a storm cause this much devastation. Some experts have likened it to Hurricane Isaac in 2012, or Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
