Healthcare providers suffer data breaches after ransomware attacks

LifeLong Medical Care, a health and social services provider based in California, has informed around 115,000 individuals of a ransomware attack resulting in a data breach. Arizona-based Desert Wells Family Medicine sent similar notifications to about 35,000 patients.

Both providers are significant targets for hungry cybercriminals, with annual revenues of about $95.65 million and $1.69 million, respectively. Data compromised in each of these breaches included patient names, Social Security numbers, patient account details, and treatment and diagnosis information.

While some extortion gangs have made promises to steer clear of healthcare organizations, not all are so generous. In 2020, more than 22 million individuals were affected by over 600 data breaches targeting the healthcare industry.

While neither organization has stated which group is responsible for the ransomware attacks, the Active Protection included in Acronis Cyber Protect detects and blocks both known and unknown forms of ransomware, keeping your sensitive data safe.
