Japanese hospital will rebuild computer systems after ransomware strike

Handa Hospital, in the Japanese town of Tsurugi, has announced that following a ransomware attack this past October, they will be spending around ¥200 million to build a new computer system instead of paying the demanded ransom.

The cyberattack made the medical records of 85,000 patients unavailable to staff, as well as impacting the hospital's accounting systems. Handa Hospital has stopped accepting new outpatients for now, but expects to return to normal operations on January 4 of next year.

Tsurugi's mayor stated that while the town initially considered paying the demanded ransom, he recognized that there would still be no guarantee of complete data recovery, and also felt that public funds should not be used to pay a criminal group.

The Active Protection included in Acronis Cyber Protect detects and blocks ransomware before files can be encrypted or stolen, keeping your data safe and your organization operating normally.
