IT pros never have enough time to get all of their work done, which is why they love any technology that can reduce the time required to complete a task. While flash memory is often seen as having a small storage capacity and high cost, it delivers quick data storage. Contrary to the past, IT pros are turning to flash to streamline the backup process and let IT teams focus their time on other tasks, according to Drew Robb at Tech Page One

“Unfortunately, many [businesses] are missing out on the opportunity to accelerate backup and restores by thinking of flash as being expensive compared to traditional storage when the real value is in terms of boosting productivity,” says Greg Schulz, an analyst at StorageIO Group.

Flash storage is a smart option for companies because of its speed. When data disaster ensues, the last thing a company wants is its data to be lost or the backup system not updated. Not only does flash store data quickly, it also helps expedite the data recovery process from being a week-long process to only requiring a few days. If data needs to be recovered, often multiple files must be located in multiple data blocks across multiple backups, but with flash storage, the file can be restored almost instantly because it's all in one place, writes Robb.

More companies are recognizing the business value of using flash storage as a backup option since when an emergency happens, it's important to have fast recovery with all of the data in one place. “SSDs and flash-based storage systems change the economics of performance, and the scale of deployments, making it more manageable for businesses to meet their performance requirements without deploying big iron,” said Everett Dolgner, director of storage and replication product management for Silver Peak.
