Galactic Advisors makes cybersecurity easy and understandable

The Acronis #CyberFit Summit 2022 was the biggest event Acronis has ever held, with more than 1,500 attendees. Galactic Advisors was a Flagship sponsor, and while at the Summit, our own Manager of Service Provider Solutions, Jeff Hardy, took the opportunity to interview Bruce McCully, Galactic Advisors CSO and one of the nation’s leaders in network cybersecurity.

Working under their motto, “We make cybersecurity easy and understandable,” Galactic Advisors is renowned for performing third-party audit analyses of MSP environments using penetration tests to improve the MSP’s security posture and those of their clients.

Commented McCully, “Galactic Advisors delivers ‘stress-free assistance’ because we perform vendor-neutral penetration testing and analysis and do not sell the MSP a security stack.” This removes the stress since Galactic Advisors has no hidden agenda. McCully goes on to explain that hiring a third party to perform the analyses is more effective than having an internal IT team analyze their work. Internal teams tend to focus on the controls they have designed, making it easier to miss vulnerabilities. An objective assessment mitigates the chances of a cyberthreat getting through its defenses. In addition to third-party assessments and penetration testing, Galactic Advisors offers security consulting, compliance planning and cyber hygiene services.

During the interview, McCully cited that one of their biggest challenges is to find a way to communicate what cyber risk is and, once identified, how the MSP can mitigate it. This is where Galactic Advisors’ analyses comes into play. McCully explains, “We simply send the MSP an email, and even a normal user simply clicks on the link and the penetration testing is completed within two days.” Galactic Advisors then performs the analysis and makes recommendations on how the MSP can secure their data, eliminate vulnerabilities, track fixes and avoid user errors and common mistakes.

Another challenge is convincing MSP clients to continue to invest in the right cybersecurity tools and solutions to protect themselves. McCully explains, “With one client, we did an assessment and made recommendations; but for some reason, the client never implemented them. Unfortunately, four months later, the client called us back in to help them with recovery. It took over 33 days to get the client back up and running.” This is an example of what can happen when you don’t make the right cybersecurity investments.
